Meet Our PA & Property Management Assistant – Sam

As we move from winter into spring, we love seeing the beautiful transformation of the seasons changing, made even better with a new addition to our team!

Meet the wonderful Sam Honour, who joined the Catch the Breeze Retreats team in January. Based in Cheshire, Sam’s role is focused on ensuring our guests have the best stay possible, helping to look after our gorgeous Oughtershaw Hall and our beautiful Craster properties on her visits to Northumberland.

A self-confessed dog lover with a passion for travel, Sam’s hobbies and breadth of experience make her a dream match for Catch the Breeze Retreats. With a love of exploring both at home and abroad, any exploration of the outdoors can often be made better with a four-legged friend, and Sam will hopefully (“keeping everything crossed”), be shortly welcoming a new puppy into her household in the spring. As well as the outdoors, Sam enjoys visiting the local gym to keep her weight down and strength up, “but it also means I can still indulge in my love of eating, especially homemade cakes. I do also enjoy a glass of red wine (although not sure you can class that as a hobby)!”

At the beginning of her career, Sam explains that she started as a medical secretary in the private sector before moving onto being a long-haul cabin crew for Japan Airlines and short-haul cabin crew for British Airways. Sam explained,“Being a keen traveller, this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and although the job could also bring its challenges, it’s amazing how you can think on your feet when you’re 30,000+ feet in the air!”

Sam’s next role took her into the veterinary world, specifically her local surgery where she says it was a real privilege to work. The position was applied for with the help of her beloved Labrador, Jet, when he was having his puppy checks, who “lived a good, healthy life until leaving us for doggy heaven last year aged 11 ½ years old.”

Due to a location move, Sam then found herself working for a small independent holiday cottage company in North Wales. A very similar hands-on role to her position at Catch the Breeze Retreats, this certainly is not Sam’s first rodeo! From guest and owner relations to liaising with trades and troubleshooting, Sam always made sure she was always available to help fix the solution to ensure a dream holiday for her guests.

And finally, when worlds collide; “This then progressed to working on a much larger scale for Sykes Holiday Cottages, which was then very coincidental that I find myself working for Clive himself at Catch the Breeze Retreats!”

The guest-centric ethos that Sam has curated throughout her career has been brought in full force to her new role at Catch the Breeze Retreats, echoing our values of providing experiences that offer something truly special.

Sam elaborates, “First and foremost are the guests. Ensuring that guests are all prepared for their arrivals, departures, and of course, the bit in-between; providing comfort for our guests during their stay. As any homeowner knows, there are always jobs presenting themselves in maintaining properties, and the presentation, comfort and functionality is key to our brand to ensure high standards.”

As Sam is very much a people-person in her own words, any opportunity to have a chat and listen to others’ life experiences is always at the top of her list when meeting guests, adding, “Not forgetting the wonderful team I work with, who bring a great variety and happiness to my day every day.”

And now onto the properties! Sam has had a tour of the gorgeous locations and their surrounding areas in Northumberland and the Yorkshire Dales, commenting that “They all are so different and beautiful in every way, and all have the most stunning interiors, but here are my personal favourite things…”

Rock Lobster

The kitchen of Rock Lobster with pancakes and a breakfast bar overlooking sea views

Rock Lobster has a family holiday feel and a beach life vibe, full of water sports and fun, whatever the weather.

The glass extension of Harbourway looking onto the garden

Harbourway is the family get-together house, exuding comfort and perfect for family gatherings, especially around that fabulous dining room table with a view. It is the perfect place for a winter warmer around the fire or taking in the sun on the beautiful terraces. The glass extension is just delightful all year round, where you’re invited to sit back and read a book.

The breakfast bar of Driftwood with sunflowers

Do not be deceived by the size of Driftwood, this property packs a punch! It has everything the larger properties has and more and is especially great if it is you and a four-legged friend; just the two of you wanting a cheeky break by the coast.

The terrace of Middlerigg overlooking Craster Harbour with a garden table and chairs

Wow, what a position! At Middlerigg, you can immerse yourself in harbour life watching the delights the sky brings in. Whether it is stormy weather or glorious blue sunny skies, it is all from the comfort of your armchair; it doesn’t get any better than that.

Craster Reach

The cosy Craster Reach living room with sofas and a fireplace

Nestled in the village, again, this is a property that is so deceiving in size, it is a Tardis. Craster Reach boasts the most amazing view from the top floor bedroom, where you’ll be sure to find it difficult to drag yourself away.

Oughtershaw Hall

Wow, wow, wow!

The pictures of Oughtershaw Hall are stunning, but this is a property you must truly immerse yourself in to get the full experience. The setting, hall, and the remarkable history that has come before you; it really arouses your curiosity. I have been absolutely blown away on every occasion I have visited.

The drive through the National Park is breath-taking and adds to the excitement as you approach. The architecture and detailing of the property are sympathetically restored, and the décor gives a nod to the past yet providing luxurious modern facilities so you can sit back and indulge yourself. Oughtershaw Hall really is the gift that just keeps on giving as you float through the building; it is dreamy.

So, now Sam has experienced the wonderful quirkiness of Craster and the Yorkshire Dales, what are her top recommendations?

“You must visit the Craster Kipper shop, it is highly recommended!”

We are glad that Sam has found the delights of Craster kippers that we all know and love! As well as the tasty local delicacies, the abundance of walks along the coastline that are right on the doorstep of our properties are a must-see, which Sam added, “I can’t wait to start exploring on my visits to Craster.”

The Yorkshire Dales

Where to begin? For pubs with great character, Sam recommends The Green Dragon Inn Hawes and the Craven Arms that is located within a historical thatch barn. Closer to home are the fantastic Bluebell Inn and The George Inn, and for some higher end food, Sam recommends Grassington House (we could not agree more!)

Food aside, there are an array of family- friendly activities scattered across the Yorkshire Dales, with the Forbidden Corner and the Wensleydale Creamery as firm favourites!

Despite Sam only joining us in January, she has thrown herself into life at Catch the Breeze Retreats and can’t wait to meet new people, guests, and get involved in some exciting projects we have on the horizon.

“Catch the Breeze Retreats is unique in its personable hands-on approach, style, properties, and people, and I am very much looking forward to embracing this opportunity with them.”

Sam has slotted right into the Catch the Breeze Retreats team! Keep an eye out for more staff updates as we may have another coming soon…
